Historic Jonestown - The Oldest and Least Known Jewish Settlement in Baltimore

Bev Rosen
September 9, 16, 23, 30 and October 7
1- 2:15 p.m. (On-site)

$50 CAC members, $70 guests

In this course we will learn about the waves of Jewish immigration and their impact on Baltimore's economy and culture. We will see wonderful pictures of the famous "Corned Beef Row" on Lombard Street. We will learn about the many uptown German Jews who established philanthropic institutions to aid the struggling Jewish immigrants. We will discuss the many synagogues that reflected Reform, Conservative and Orthodox sects and the struggles of keeping old traditions while becoming prosperous American Jews. Finally, we will see how the suburban exodus and the growing prosperity of the Jews marked movements out of Jonestown, which became an area to be feared from guns, drugs and violence. We will glory in the remarkable rejuvenation and rebirth of Jonestown as a place to visit many historic landmarks and still get a corned beef sandwich.
